Adeel Masih – Finding Safety After Religious Persecution
For Adeel Masih and his family, their home was once a place of prayer, peace and hope. Living in Sialkot with his wife, Uzma Bibi, and their six children, the family gathered each evening to read the Bible and pray together despite the financial challenges they faced. Everything changed during the early hours of 3 July 2025. While the family was praying, several men forced their way into their home and accused them of practising black magic after hearing them read from the Holy Bible. Instead of accepting Adeel's explanation that the family was praying, the intruders assaulted him and demanded that he and his wife renounce their Christian faith. Fearing for the safety of his children, Adeel complied under duress. However, Uzma courageously refused to deny her faith in Jesus Christ, despite being physically assaulted and threatened. Their six children witnessed the terrifying attack, leaving the entire family traumatised and fearing for their lives. When some of the attackers returned the following morning, the family realised they could no longer remain in their community.
With nowhere safe to go, they fled their home in search of protection. After learning of their situation, The EDGE Foundation responded immediately by providing emergency financial assistance, enabling the family to secure temporary accommodation and meet their most urgent needs. The Foundation also supported their relocation to a safer location, where they could begin rebuilding their lives away from the threats they had endured. Today, although Adeel and his family continue to recover from the trauma of religious persecution, they are living in greater safety and looking towards the future with renewed hope.
Mehak – Protecting a Vulnerable Child
At just 14 years old, Mehak should have been enjoying her childhood and attending school. Instead, she found herself at the centre of a traumatic ordeal that left her family displaced, frightened and searching for safety. Coming from a poor Christian family in Faisalabad, Mehak worked alongside her mother as a domestic worker to help support her parents and five siblings. The family depended on their modest income to survive, but their lives changed dramatically when Mehak was falsely accused of theft by her employer after refusing to stay overnight at the family home. According to the family, Mehak was unlawfully detained, physically assaulted and pressured into confessing to a crime she insists she did not commit. They also allege that she was taken to a police station without proper legal safeguards for a minor and subjected to intimidation and coercion. Following the incident, the family reported ongoing threats and harassment, forcing them to flee their home and seek refuge with relatives. Living in fear and uncertainty, they struggled to find safety while trying to protect Mehak from further harm.
After learning of the family's situation, The EDGE Foundation visited them to assess their needs and immediately began providing humanitarian and protection support. The Foundation arranged emergency financial assistance, supported the family's relocation to a safer environment and began helping them access legal protection. Plans were also made to support Mehak through vocational skills training, enabling her to rebuild her confidence and look towards a more secure future. Although the family continues to seek justice and protection, they no longer face this difficult journey alone. Through practical assistance, legal support and compassionate care, The EDGE Foundation remains committed to helping vulnerable children like Mehak live free from fear, exploitation and abuse. Mehak's story highlights the urgent need to protect children from exploitation, ensure equal access to justice and provide hope to families facing persecution and hardship.
Sonia's Story – Rebuilding After Tragedy
Sonia Bibi's life was turned upside down after the tragic death of her husband, Shahid, who allegedly died after being falsely accused of theft and subjected to severe violence by his employer. Although legal proceedings have taken place, the family continues to wait for justice. Left to care for six young children and her elderly mother-in-law, Sonia now survives on irregular cleaning work, while her mother-in-law earns a small income as a domestic worker. Together, they struggle to cover rent, food, utilities and their children's education. With regular support, families like Sonia's can access safe housing, nutritious food, education for their children and the stability needed to begin rebuilding their lives after unimaginable loss.
